Water Board Grants Sewer Hookup For Septic Failure

Municipal Authority · Meeting of June 3, 2026

Dudley water board approves sewer tie-in after costly septic failure. The Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to let a homeowner connect the property known as 20 JBF to the municipal sewer system after a Title 5 septic failure, with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection approving the exception in writing. The owner faces a $350 connection permit fee rather than a new septic system estimated at more than $100,000.

Commissioners also sparred over whether the department should have paid its half of a consultant study on highway cost-sharing, with one member saying, "I don't think we should have paid our half on the consultant fee because they weren't going to listen to it anyway." The board separately questioned why solar credits under its Ameresco energy contract aren't being tracked, asking, "So the town's not tracking that?" Staff also flagged that the sewer budget is running at 85 to 89 percent spent with about a month left in the fiscal year.
