Dudley Health Board Upholds Tobacco Suspension

Other Committee · Meeting of August 18, 2026

Dudley Board of Health upholds a three-day tobacco suspension and confronts a stalled beach reopening. Owner Paret Patel of West Main Liquors, who had already paid a $1,000 fine for a May 30 sale to an underage inspector, sought leniency on the suspension; the board declined, citing a 2020 standard applied to two other Dudley stores caught the same day. "I know the laws, and I always obey the laws," Patel told the board.

Health Agent Justin reported the town beach has been closed more than three weeks after bacteria readings swung by roughly 31 times in 48 hours, with one sample nearing 2,000 and little season left before Labor Day. The board also granted a septic variance for 21 Sunrise Shore Road contingent on three years of annual well testing, approved a corrected well-setback filing for 181 Dressahill Road, and opened discussion on restoring public comment to its agenda with time limits, to return in September.
