Dudley Redirects $678K in Free Cash After Override Fails
Select Board · Meeting of October 1, 2026
Dudley redirects $678,499 in free cash to departments and reserves after override defeat. Town Administrator John Ruda told the Select Board and Finance and Appropriation Advisory Committee that the certified free cash would restore $83,000 to police, $86,000 to fire and $50,000 to highway, with $211,173 to stabilization and $130,000 to the FAA reserve, after two override questions totaling $717,630 failed September 29. "We're not making the cuts tonight," Ruda said, though he warned public safety reductions remain possible later this fiscal year.
The supplemental budget and stabilization articles each passed 4-1 and 4-0-1 respectively amid sharp debate over using reserves to balance budgets. The board also advanced a health insurance opt-out incentive, a building department pay-as-you-go pilot, and a $500,000 warrant article to replace water treatment plant filtration media, and approved its eight-article Annual Town Meeting warrant for October 19.
